Our District
Welcome to the greater Sunraysia district supporting a district
population of approximately 50,000, incorporating the major
regional city of Mildura and the Wentworth Shire on the New
South Wales side. This area also features other towns on the
riverfront including Buronga, Dareton, Gol Gol and Pooncarie.
Sunny mild winters and picturesque locations on the banks of
the Murray make Mildura and these neighboring towns a popular
tourist area. Mildura on the Calder Highway, 545 km north of
Melbourne and 400 km east of Adelaide, is a pleasant city which
developed along with irrigation of the area.
Alfred Deakin, statesman and advocate of irrigation, persuaded
the Chaffey Brothers, Canadian born irrigation experts, to visit
the region. They recognized it’s potential and selected
Mildura as the first site for development. Mildura is an Aboriginal
word that translate to “red earth”
The historic town of Wentworth, Sunraysia’s oldest town,
lies at the meeting place of the Darling and Murray Rivers.
Once the busiest inland port in New South Wales, today you can
revisit that bygone era by exploring many historic sites around
town.
The region’s natural assets speak for themselves, the
beautiful weather and magnificent Murray and Darling rivers
supplying the irrigation that makes this area the great horticulture
centre of north-west Victoria and lower south-west division
of New South Wales.
With many tourist attractions in the Sunraysia and Murray Outback
area, ranging from museums, places of historical interest tours,
paddleboats, art and craft galleries, wineries and attractions
showcasing the produce of the region, we truly believe there
is something for everyone.
Our region hosts more than 300 community, regional, state, national
and international events annually. |
